Many homeowners are unaware
that there are both public
and private underground utilities
buried under their properties.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind!
There are more than 20 million miles of
buried underground utilities in the USA.
65% of those utilities are private.
Only 50% of the general public understands that they are required by law to call 811 before doing any digging on their property.
Even if it's only with a shovel.
Many utilities are not buried very deep.
Communications lines are 6"-12" deep.
When called, 811 only locates public utilities.
Private utilities are left unlocated and vulnerable.
If a homeowner fails to notify 811 of excavation
work and a public utility is struck
they are generally liable for the repair.

Remember-Safety First-Call Before You Dig!
Bob Kipp, President of the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), a group
dedicated to preventing underground utility damage,
estimates there are 400,000 to 500,000 utility strikes per year in the United States.
Of those, 95% cost less than $500, and homeowners and landscapers are responsible for most of them.
"I don't know about you, but that's $500 I'd like to spend on something else!"
Property Owners are unaware that 811 is a call service that notifies public utility companies of a proposed dig.
Those utility companies send a locator to mark their public utilities only.
Once they have located those public utilities (gas, phone, electric) their responsibility ends.
After calling 811 many homeowners receive a false sense of security assuming that all
buried utilities on their property have been found.
A Costly Assumption!
Real Life Impact:
I had a contractor bust a gas line when digging for a fence post. The utility folks showed up, had him sign some paperwork, fixed the line, and assured us that we wouldn't be liable. Now the contractor is MIA and the gas company is saying I need to pay the $1000 repair bill.
Many homeowners find themselves at home due to the effects of Covid-19. To keep busy they are gardening, planting trees and doing home improvement projects. Now more than ever it's important to 'Know What's Below' before starting any excavation project.
Our goal at Dig-Doctor is to come along side property owners and provide them the tools they need to
protect themselves from both physical and financial harm. For less than the cost of the average repair bill
we can equip you with the knowledge of what is located under and around your home.
